HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES
Amaku Cottage Hospital as it was originally called started functioning as a community hospital in 1956. It was established by the Awka community in honour and memory of her illustrious son, Dr Philip Nweke Amaku.
The community hospital was handed over to the Governor of Anambra State in 1980 and it was renamed Amaku General Hospital, Awka.
In September 1991, with the creation of new Anambra State its name and status were changed to a specialist hospital. However, with the advent of a new government in March 2006, the process of transformation received a boost with the creation of key department (Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Surgery, Internal medicine) all headed by consultants. In line with the governments’ developmental strategy, Amaku Specialist Hospital received a lot of equipment to enable the specialists deliver quality health services in a manner that is appropriate and efficient.
