Dr Josephat Akabuike Chukwudi was graciously appointed as the Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital – Amaku (COOUTH-Amaku) by His Excellency, Governor Willie Obiano. The appointment took effect from 10th March, 2021.

Dr. Akabuike hails from Nanka in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State. He was born on the 3rd of July, 1964. He attended Nkwoagu Primary School between 1972-1978 and St. Peter’s Secondary School, Achina between 1978-1983. He obtained a MBBS degree from the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus in 1990. He is a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) under Obstetrics and Gynecology with subspecialty in Oncology in 2009.

More to that, he started off his medical practice in St. Charles Borromeo Hospital, Onitsha and proceeded to work in Comprehensive Health Centre Raba, Sokoto under the National Youth Service Scheme. Additionally, he further served as a Medical officer in General Hospital Kaura namoda, Zamfara State, General Hospital Wurno, Sokoto, Vantage Hospital and Maternity, Umuchu, Chidera Model Hospital, Uga Anambra State and Nnamdi Azikiwe Univeristy Teaching Hospital, Nnewi Anambra State respectively.

Dr. Akabuike has dutifully served Anambra State in various capacities, he was appointed as the Commissioner for Health from 2014 – 2019 after which he worked as the Chairman Governing Council, School of Health, Obosi from 2019 -2021. Besides these, he offers expert services as a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of COOUTH-Amaku till he was appointed as the Chief Medical Director of the Hospital.

He is a respectable member of several learned societies and professional bodies both locally and internationally and has attended several academic professional conferences. Dr. Akabuike is a renowned researcher with different publications to his credit.

Award as an outstanding Medical Practitioner by the Nigerian Medical Association, 2012.

Nanka Development Contributors award, 2010-2013.

Awka Diocesan CWO’s awards as an exemplary medical practitioner, 2014.

Nanka student’s union award for his contribution to the development of education, 2014.

Distinguished service award by college of medicine. University of Nigeria Nsukka, 2016.
